QUICK ANSWERS TO COMMON QUESTIONS about CHIROPRACTIC CARE

FAQ’S

What is Chiropractic care?

Chiropractic is a natural form of health care which has evolved over the past 115 years. The underlying principle of chiropractic care is that health problems can be treated and prevented by correcting spinal dysfunction. This is based on the vital relationship between the spine and the nervous system.
How does Chiropractic work?
Your nervous system controls the function of every cell, tissue, organ, and system in your body. In order to do this, nerves pass from the brain down through the spine and out through the holes between the bones of the spine (vertebrae). From here your nerves continue to spread throughout the rest of your body.

Correct spinal alignment and movement is essential for the healthy function of your nervous system. Physical stress, including trauma and unhealthy posture can cause vertebrae to lose their ideal healthy alignment and movement. This dysfunction is called “vertebral subluxation”. Untreated spinal stress and subluxations can lead to pain and discomfort.

Doctors of Chiropractic focus on detecting and removing subluxations, thereby allowing your body to function at its best.

What is an adjustment?
An adjustment is a gentle and efficient technique designed to restore normal movement and alignment of the spine.
What conditions is Chiropractic care recommended for?
The most common problems people seek Chiropractic care for are:

  • back pain
  • neck pain
  • rib problems
  • low back pain including disc / sciatica
  • poor posture
  • scoliosis
  • headaches and migraines
  • whiplash
  • pain of the pelvis and groin including pelvic instability due to pregnancy
When should I see a Chiropractor?
There are a number of indicators that can help you determine if you need to see a chiropractor including:

  • Sore/stiff neck or back
  • Headaches
  • Muscle spasms in the back
  • Joint pain
  • Numbness, tingling, or altered sensations
Is Chiropractic care safe for children?

Our Chiropractor will perform a thorough examination to determine exactly how your child’s spine is functioning, then discuss with you if chiropractic care could be of benefit. The initial consultation and examination starts from only $58 and our standard treatment fee is $75. We do however offer packages to make the fees even more affordable. All our treatment programs are tailored to your individual needs.

Do chiropractors really help?

Yes, we do. On a daily basis we are treating patients suffering from neck pain, back pain, headaches, shoulder pain, bad posture and sciatica. Chiropractors are registered practitioners that help 1000s of Australians every day.

What conditions do chiropractors treat?

Doctors of Chiropractic (DCs) care for patients of all ages, with a variety of health conditions. At North Shore Family Chiropractors the health conditions that we see the most are; neck pain, back pain, sciatic pain, pain related to scoliosis, shoulder pain, headaches, postural problems and pain related to pregnancy. In addition, we offer advice to our patients around exercise and occupational and lifestyle improvements.

How do I select a doctor of chiropractic?

One of the best ways to find a Doctor of chiropractic (DC) is by getting a referral from a trusted friend, family member, colleague, or another healthcare provider. You can also contact the Australian Chiropractic Association to find a Chiropractor in your area.

Is chiropractic treatment safe?

Chiropractic treatment is one of the safest forms of manual therapy available in Australia. Although Chiropractic has an excellent safety record, like all healthcare treatments there are some risks. The most common risk is mild muscle or joint soreness. If this occurs it usually occurs the next morning after treatment but usually disappears before the end of the day. If you have any concerns, feel free to discuss it with our Doctor before treatment begins. We are here to help.

Does chiropractic treatment require a referral from a GP?

No. A referral is not needed to see a Doctor of chiropractic (DC) in Australia.
However, there is an opportunity to claim 5 treatments through Medicare for patients with chronic conditions. In order to be eligible for this you will require a referral from your GP.

Do insurance plans cover chiropractic care?

Yes. Most private health insurance plans allow you to claim Chiropractic treatment. However, we always recommend speaking with your fund to confirm this directly.

Is chiropractic treatment ongoing?

It depends on what your personal goals are. If you are concerned about a symptom or pain that you are experiencing, then the focus of treatment is to progress until the symptom or pain is gone. However, many people have bigger goals then just removing pain. A lot of patients want to protect themselves long term and prevent spinal disease. In this situation ongoing care may be suitable. The purpose of the initial consultation and report of findings is to determine your personal goals and how the Chiropractor can help you best.

Why is there sometimes a popping sound when a joint is adjusted?

An adjustment (or manipulation) of a joint may result in the release of a gas bubbles between the joints, which makes a popping sound. The noise is caused by the change of pressure within the joint, which results in gas bubbles being released. The same thing occurs when you “crack” your knuckles. There is usually minimal, if any, discomfort involved.

How often will I have to see my chiropractor?

This is different for every patient. Five patients can come to the practice for back pain and all have pain for different reasons. Therefore, they could all require a different amount of treatment to solve the problem. Generally speaking, the more chronic and severe a problem is, the longer it takes to resolve.  Recovery time can also be affected by lifestyle factors which will be discussed with your Chiropractor. The report of findings visit is designed to answer any questions you may have about the amount of treatment necessary to get you better.
