Back Pain – Causes, Symptoms and Treatment

What is Back Pain?

Back pain can be described as an ache, tension or stiffness in your back. Back pain is very common and affects most people at some point in their life. In fact, about 10% of the population will consult their doctor or chiropractor about their back pain each year. Back problems are a common reason for pain among younger and middle-aged adults, but they can start early in life – between ages 8 and 10.

Back pain can be caused by a number of things, such as a sudden movement or a fall, an injury or other medical conditions. The most common cause is usually from the way the bones, discs, tendons, muscles and ligaments interact and work together which is commonly referred to as mechanical back pain. Although back pain may resolve within a few days or weeks, sometimes back pain can be ongoing and begin to interfere with your daily functioning.

At North Shore Family Chiropractors in Chatswood, we offer treatment and pain relief for Middle Back Pain (which we discuss in more detail on this page) as well as Lower Back Pain and Neck Pain.

At North Shore Family Chiropractors our focus is on assisting our patients with pain relief and improving the structure and function of their spine and back. Chiropractic adjustments help to improve the movement of the spine and the health of the nervous system which can lead to improvement of pain and other symptoms.

In addition, we use one of the most researched chiropractic techniques in the world, Chiropractic Biophysics (CBP) which we integrate with traditional Chiropractic treatment. This is a scientific approach to spinal re-alignment and postural correction. Our clinic is equipped with an expansive patient gym with unique CBP equipment to complement our programs.

Can a chiropractor cure my back pain?

Chiropractic manipulation has been shown in studies to be an effective treatment for back pain. Thousands of people use chiropractic adjustments to help their back pain each day. However, at North Shore Family Chiropractors there are other skills that our chiropractors are trained in including spinal mobilisation, soft tissue therapy and decompression traction.  Whether your back pain is caused by tight muscles, stiff joints or herniated discs we can provide a treatment option that can help you.

Can a chiropractor fix my lower back pain?

Yes, Chiropractors are trained to examine and treat different causes of low back pain.  Spinal manipulation and spinal mobilisation are popular techniques used by chiropractors for treating low back pain and these treatment methods have been used for over 100 years. If your low back pain is due to herniated discs, we also offer spinal decompression traction.

Do you need a referral to see a chiropractor in Australia?

No, you do not need a referral to see a Chiropractor.  Chiropractors are primary health care providers focusing mostly on problems related to the spine.  Conditions we commonly treat are low back pain, neck pain, disc herniations, sciatic pain, pain during pregnancy, postural problems, scoliosis and shoulder problems.

What does a chiropractor do for lower back pain?

The most common techniques for lower back pain are either spinal adjustments or spinal mobilisation which is aimed at restoring proper spinal movement and relieving tension.  However, Chiropractors also use soft tissue therapy and stretching to help people recover from lower back pain. If your low back pain is due to herniated discs, we also offer spinal decompression traction.

How often should you see a chiropractor for lower back pain?

This depends on the cause of the lower back pain and how long you have had the problem. Chronic cases tend to take longer to recover and usually require more treatment.  However on average patients tend to recover between 6 -12 treatments.

Should I see an osteopath or chiropractor for lower back pain?

Whether you see an Osteopath or a Chiropractor for lower back pain is a personal choice. Chiropractors commit a significant amount of time studying and treating the different causes of lower back pain.  In our office we can also take x-ray images as part of an assessment if required to help understand fully the cause of the lower back pain. This is one of our unique features compared to osteopaths.

Can a chiropractor help with severe lower back pain?

Yes of course.  Regardless of the severity of the symptoms, we can help people with lower back pain.

How Much Does Chiropractic Treatment Cost in Australia?

The price can vary by a small margin throughout Australia.  In our clinic the cost of an initial assessment is $58, and treatment is $75 for adults and $55 for students.

How long does it take a chiropractor to fix lower back pain?

How quickly a person recovers from lower back pain can vary.  Some patients recover quickly within 1-3 treatments.  Others who have more chronic lower back pain can take up to 2-3 months.

Should I go to the chiropractor if my lower back hurts?

A chiropractor is an excellent option if you are experiencing lower back pain.  Chiropractors study for 5 years in important areas such as anatomy, physiology, clinical diagnosis and treatment methods of Musculo-skeletal disorders and pain.  Chiropractors are primary health care providers which means you do not need a referral to see one.

Are chiropractors worth the money?

Chiropractic care offers people a safe, effective, natural therapy to help improve various spinal conditions and pain. There are also several advantages to visiting a chiropractor which are hard to put a price on such as the shift in your quality of life, better sleep, less pain, more mobility and other potential benefits.
